Ancient Beginnings
The story of marshmallows began in ancient Egypt, around 2000 BCE. The Egyptians discovered that the root of the marshmallow plant (Althaea officinalis) could be used to create a sweet treat. They combined the root’s sap with nuts and honey to create a confection reserved for gods and royalty.
The French Connection
In the early 19th century, French confectioners revolutionized marshmallow production. They whipped the sap from the marshmallow root with egg whites and sugar, creating a sweet, fluffy treat similar to modern marshmallows. This labour-intensive process was known as the “French method.”
